Gratitude, a way out of the darkness.

Giving gratitude. It is sometimes done when you have received something you wish for, forgotten when things are going well, and rejected during times of struggle, or sorrow.

Life throws us curve balls, and we can at times find ourselves in a well. The depth may vary, and within that depth, the play of light available to guide us out is affected.

We must remember that we are energy, life, and a source of light within this world. We have the strength to find our own way.

It is at these times, that you have to struggle to reclaim your strength, to not give up, or give in. When you feel you are at a low point, find strength through gratitude. Dig as deep as the well you are in, for anything in your life which still brings you joy, peace, laughter, and sustain you.

My life has taken me into a well recently, and the longer it is taking me to emerge from this space, I can at times find that my spirit is waning, my confidence weakening, and my resolve dissolving…. But by giving thanks for what still remains, I can replenish all of this.

In building a despacho I am able to find myself again. With each layer added to the despacho I give gratitude for what remains, and for what I have within me, my strengths which can help me solve the riddle of the well. As the despacho grows, so does the strength of my spirit, confidence and resolve.

Each aspect in my life that I am grateful for becomes a foothold out of that well. Each step gets me closer to the top, allowing the light to reveal more solutions… allowing me to see that while my own inner strength got me started, there were in fact hands waiting for me, to help me a little further along the way.

It does take time. My situation is 5 months and going strong, but I am stronger. And so are you. As long as we remember that when we feel we have nothing to be grateful for, that is the most important time to show gratitude. It reminds us of our strength, and of the support of Spirit.

I wrote this poem originally as my meal time β€œGrace”. It was the inspiration for this post, because it reminded me, at a time when I was only looking down within the well, that I still had my life, air to breath, the warmth of a blanket at night under the security of a roof, and while my cupboards are leaner these days, I still have the basics to sustain me. Not everyone can say this… so I am grateful. Every day.

For those who do not follow a Shamanic based path, a despacho can be as simple as a bowl filled each day with strips of paper you have written something you are reminded to be grateful for. As it grows, so will your strength. Be grateful, and reclaim who you are.

In Service, Namaste.

    • Lovely post! Gratitude is something I’ve been reminding myself of daily, realizing I’m focused more due to some (more than usual) back pain. I catch myself getting angry, so I’ll remind myself “I’m so grateful I don’t have to go to work!” “I’m grateful I have the time and tools to help heal myself!”
Top10 Gratitude List at this moment
1-My husband. I know I am fully supported, on any subject, even when we disagree. There may be debates, but no heated arguing. He wakes me up with laughter, love and kisses; allowing me to follow what ever makes my heart happy at any given time. His love is so pure and kind. He’s also a wonderful teacher
2-My sister’s! Because…they’re my sisters! I am so grateful I have these two amazing females as “back-up” in my life! For all the tears I don’t cry on Dan’s shoulders. I could go on forever about these two…
3-My health. Coming close to death twice in the last 10years, I express my gratitude daily for just waking up! Any complaints I may have are quickly nipped when I remember the few people (during my times in the hospitals)that never had anyone visit/support/hug them, and some never left. The experience taught me to live more in the moment, heal the past, move forward. Some lessons need BIG teaching moments…
4-My guitar! Playing gives me time to be alone, create, let my mind drift. It takes me back to a simpler time in my life.
5-The park with a satellite library within walking distance from my home. It is heavenly to walk out my door,(exercise!) through the park, and lose myself among the books for awhile! So grateful for my gift of sight since reading is such a passion for me.
6-AA The program really has given me a second chance at living a fulfilling life, and re-awakening my spirituality
7-Always grateful for being able to put a variety of foods on the table. I can afford to eat healthier, I’m lucky to have choices and grateful Dan (husband)loves to cook and experiment in the kitchen. This brings me pure entertainment and joy as he whistles and creates!
8-The Harley! Another source of freedom! The up close and personal with mother nature is always amazing! Whether it is a Bison in Yellowstone or the smells of the wildflowers, it soothes the soul. It also brings me closer to Dan, watching people react with smiles to us as I put my head on his shoulder at stop signs, or whisper secrets in his ears.
9-My best friend! After 25 years, I am so grateful for her love, support and all the memories we share. After all we’ve been through, we are still full of laughter, teasing and midnight calls if needed. The stability of our relationship is beautiful. (I’ve known people longer, but the depth of our friendship is unsurpassed)
10-So very grateful for my bedroom window! The moon shines upon my bed, the birds sit and sing on the fence right outside, and the breeze blows in and keeps things fresh!
I was following your Ayurvedic teachings on facebook, and have been reading you here for quite some time. (Shelley Lien Santos)
You have taught me about things I never would have thought about, and I love you for that!
I’m grateful today (5/11) I’ve made it one more year around the sun!

      • Oh I am so sorry! It says something about our culture. And thank you, thank you! Now, can you tell this old person how to pm you on YouTube? I subscribed, and cannot find the correct icon. I am slightly tech challenged.
